When Your Doctor is Wrong, Hepatitis B Vaccine and Autism
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (June, 2002)
Author: Judy Converse
Average review score:

Kendra, Parent of Autistic Hep B damaged child
I had read 30 different books on Autism and related topics, before I read "When Your Doctor is Wrong,...". Her book was a validation of everything that all those other books left out. Finally someone looked at the one shot I knew was our problem Hep B. I got the book in the mail on a Friday, and finished it before going to sleep on Friday night. I felt like our families knew each other in the similarities. You hear so much about the MMR or the DPT, finally Judy gives us a clue to what may be triggering ALL of the others. Or, we may have to look at the possibility that different vaccines cause reactions in different children. For the first time, a book on Autism left nothing out that affected us. I always knew that the Hep B caused my daughters problems but no one else has mentioned it. I cried when I realized that five months of screaming as an infant was "NOT" colic. Judy's indignant anger shows through, yet is controlled, reasonable and above all understandable. Despite everything this family endured they also kept a healthy sense of humor. When you hear her story, you can relate to the treatment parents receive when doctors think they are right but you know they are wrong, because our gut instinct as a mother tells us so. Then she gives ideas on how to help your child to recover as best as possible, and the necessity of early diagnosis and intervention to have the greatest affect. This is a great read, like a mystery and adventure, but, it is a true story and on one of the most important topics of our day. Nice to get some validation from not just a parent but a professional in her own right with the knowledge we REALLY need to help our kids. This book helped me make discovery's and come to grips with my situation, other conditions and situations in my family and a new approach to everything, not just the Autism. Thanks to the author for doing this so well.

A Must for Parents
This book is a must for anyone who feels alone and helpless because they can't get answers to questions about their child's developmental problems, for anyone who has been intimidated by health professionals, and for all parents who want to take responsibility for keeping their children safe and healthy! When I have time to pick up the book, it is very hard to put down. It's well-written, fascinating, and heart-wrenching. I feel very angry at what this family has been subjected to, but I admire Judy for her persistence and devotion to her son.

Judy, you deserve a medal!
"When Your Doctor is Wrong" is an unbelievable journey through early parenthood following an adverse reaction to the Hepatitis B Vaccine. It tugged at my emotions - I felt angry and incredibly sad at the unfair blow dealt to Judy's family. It challenged me intellectually - what did I know about the Hepatitis B Vaccine and the epidemiology of Hepatitis B? It inspired me to ask questions and look critically at the issue of vaccine safety. All parents-to-be, all parents and all health care professionals involved in the care of infants should read this book. A book that took incredible determination and courage to write. Congratulations, Judy!

How To Organize Your Household In One Hour Per Day
Published in Paperback by PublishAmerica (January, 2003)
Author: Jeanne Converse
Average review score:

Organizing my house in only one hour a day??? WOW
I didn't think it was possible. I had clutter from one end of the house to the other. I whined about never having the time to keep the house clean - organized. I work full-time - my husband works full-time. We have NO children. Yet, I never had time on my days off to center on making everything right.

Then, I saw this book title... 'one hour a day' -- I could do that!

And I can! One room at a time, one hour a day. It's all about common sense and a commitment to get rid of that junk that I've been saving -- it seems like forever.

Clothes that I might fit into again? HA! (I had three closets full of assorted sizes...) Tools that might come in handy some day? Junk that I couldn't find the heart to part with - sentimental or practical - it's still JUNK!

It's so simple. I wish I had thought of it.

Don't Give Up, Get Started!
If keeping an orderly household is distasteful or impossible for you, take heart. Once you put into practice the simple procedures outlined in this little book, you are apt to spend more than an hour straightening up just because the end results are so satisfying. Jeanne's friendly book presents a sensible way to de-clutter you house from attic to basement, changing it from a disgusting maze into a pleasant haven.

To rescue yourself from the messes you and your family have allowed to accumulate, you need to plan your work and then work your plan. I urge you to sit down and read this book today. Tomorrow you will be ready to choose the room that bothers you most, set your timer, and get to work. When the timer stops, you stop. That's it. Then
go relax knowing there's one spot a lot more organized in your house.

The Travelers' Guide to Asian Customs & Manners: How to Converse, Dine, Tip, Drive, Bargain, Dress, Make Friends, and Conduct Business While in Asia
Published in Paperback by St. Martin's Press (December, 1998)
Authors: Elizabeth Devine and Nancy L. Braganti
Average review score:

Fantastic all-in-one guide to Asian customs
I purchased an earlier edition of this book back in the late eighties, and since then have referred to it time and time again prior to traveling to an Asian country for the first time. The book covers almost all Asian countries from Japan to India, and for the most part has been right on the money in its descriptions of the countries where I have worked or visited (Korea, Thailand, Phillipines, China, Australia). A chapter is devoted to each country with sections covering public/private behavior, meals, table manners, general business practices, etc. There are lists of dos and don'ts for the reader to follow, and advice on hotels, restaurants, tipping, transportation, and dress as well. It makes for interesting reading on different cultures even if one does not intend to travel to Asia anytime in the near future. Although whole books could easily be written on this topic for each country, this one covers the most important items in a well-organized manner.

X Window System Toolkit, A Complete Programmer's Guide and Specification
Published in Paperback by Digital Press (April, 1998)
Authors: Paul J. Asente, Donna Converse, Ralph R. Swick, and Paul Assente
Average review score:

excellent
If you're serious about Xt programming (writing professional-quality applications with custom widgets, etc.), you need this book. It is very detailed and very accurate. It was written by some of the original Xt developers and their insight is not available in writing anywhere else. Unfortunately, the 2nd edition costs twice as much as the first edition. If your budget is limited, see if you can find a used copy of the first edition. It won't discuss the newest features, but the older APIs are mostly still useful.

Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior (Shambhala Lion Editions)
Published in Audio Cassette by Shambhala Audio (March, 1998)
Authors: Chogyam Trungpa and William Converse-Roberts
Average review score:

If you are reading this now then your search is complete.
"The Shambhala teachings are founded on the premise that there is basic human wisdom that can help to solve the world's problems. This wisdom does not belong to any one culture or religion, nor does it come only from the West or the East. Rather, it is a tradition of human warriorship that has existed in many cultures at many times throughout history". - Chogyam Trungpa

The book looks at the principles of warriorship, and this is non-aggressive, no swords and daggers here.

I read this book and it was like having spent my whole life walking from place to place. Then one day being given a bicycle to travel around. And one night, whilst asleep, dreaming of the awesome speed I was now able to travel at, someone sneaks into my garage and fits a turbo charged, jet powered, rocket engine.

I would recommend this book to anyone, and have been doing, if you are reading this now then your search is complete, there is no need to go any further. Put it in your shopping basket and get ready for the rollercoaster ride of your life.

This book has been my daily study guide for 25 years
I rely on this book, it has been my companion for many years everywhere I go. I have given away dozens of copies, in various printings, to friends and foe.

What makes this 'pocket classic' edition special is the package: it is tiny. It really does fit in a small pocket; it is about the size of a deck of cards (I think - it has been a long time since I have seen a deck of cards!). But despite its minuscule size, it is easy to read, the print is clear and simple.

The content, too, is clear and simple. The Path of the Warrior is a way of being in the worl. It is not a religion, but a path to spirit. It is said to be very old (from well before Buddhism) and it is completely contemporaneous.

If your eyes are not as good as they were or as they should be, you should buy the more normal size book. But, definitely, buy it! It will change your life.

a beginners guide to Shambhala
Shambhala: The Sacred path of the Warrior is a book I read on whimsy. I read this book originally because of the relationship Trungpa had with Allen Ginsberg. I was curious so I picked up a copy of this book. It was enlightening because this is the real deal unlike a lot of the half baked Zen Buddhism invoked by many beatnik types. One need not drop acid to gain wisdom here. If you want the hokey, trippie hippie Buddhism, forget this book. Trungpa is writing of an ancient code of warriorship. It is an inward, spiritual journey drawn from the Tibetan warrior culture. One who reads this and learns the lessons it teaches will be assisted in overcoming self doubt and negativity. This is not a book of violence. It is really a guide towards overcoming violence. It is about learning mastery over oneself. I was inspired to be better after reading this book. It made me believe in the possibility of transcendence. That is saying something, too. It is a very motivational book.

PHP Bible, 2nd Edition
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (11 September, 2002)
Authors: Tim Converse and Joyce Park
Average review score:

Good Overall Tutorial - Lacks Advanced Info
I bought this book because I needed a good PHP reference, and I don't regret it. It is current through PHP 4.2 and it describes many features that are available in Zend Engine 2 (ZE2 wasn't released yet at time of publication).

It is an easy read (an important element often overlooked in technical references), without leaving out any of the requisite technical 'goodies', but I would have liked a little more in-depth advanced information. While technically correct, several 'advanced' topics only received the most superficial of explanations, and in one case, a common (and beguiling) misconception involving Object Oriented Programming techniques was explained away as "Obscure".

There are plenty of excellent discussions about the most awkward aspects of PHP development, and it is obvious that the authors are experienced web developers. I learned much that I didn't know, and I enjoyed the authors' candor when, in several instances, they admit that they were confused or stumped at first by one feature or another.

I think most beginning to intermediate web developers, whether independent or as part of a team, will find this book very useful and full of good information; but if you need a truly advanced understanding of PHP, you'd better look elsewhere.

Great for PHP Beginners or Intermediates.
I'm a PHP beginner-intermediate, and I use this book on an open source project called mod_pubsub as my primary PHP reference for PHP through 4.2. The authors have an easy-to-read style, and they are very honest when it comes to what PHP can and cannot do. I definitely recommend this book for other PHP beginners and intermediates.

Completely comprehensive...
There's not much more that can be asked for from this book. An excellent book to say the least.

The Risk Pool
Published in Audio Cassette by Random House (Audio) (January, 1990)
Authors: Richard Russo and William Converse-Roberts
Average review score:

A big story in the all the best ways. Loved it.
After the slim tragedy of Mohawk, Richard Russo really exploded with Risk Pool. This is a long, satisfying, involved book covering the length of a relationship between father and son. It's populated by Russo's typical denim-collar roustabouts and academic escapees--a population with whom I doubt I'll ever tire.

Personally I'm a huge fan of this kind of large, quasi-Dickensian fiction. It creates a world you can enter and enjoy for longer than just the day or three it takes to read most novels these days. This is more poignant than either Nobody's Fool or Straight Man, but I think it carries its weight/drama very well. And it left my wife in tears, so it's definitely got the power to grip you emotionally. I can't recommend highly enough.

Fantastic dialogue; poignant; entertaining
I have not enjoyed a novel like this in a long time. True, a long, sweeping saga, but masterfully executed. The characters are so real, so genuine, I often forgot I was reading at all...I was sitting at the bar, grinning myself at the witty dialogue. I've only read Straight Man by Russo, which was amusing, but I found this novel to have more substance. I especially like how the entire book is pulled together by Ned's grandfather's sarcastic version of the seasons: Fourth of July, Mohawk Fair, Eat the Bird, and Winter, which dictates the flow of life in Mohawk as well as the Hall "family". Russo has a knack for creating unusual yet memorable characters with wacky, poignant misadventures that stick with you for a long time.

The Risk Pool- you won't want to put it down
The Risk Pool is a stellar read. I greatly enjoyed it and would reccomend it to readers of all genres. For those not familiar with Russo's writing style, he cleverly combines the more serious moments in life with a wonderful sense of humor as is seen throughout this novel. There are so many wonderful examples of clever comedy in the book that to mention one would not suffice to say just how good it is. Russo has a strong command of tone in relation to the book's humor. Also, he provides us with many interesting and often unusual family situations- the character of Sam Hall (Ned's father) is most often at the center of such circumstances. Another wonderful facet to Russo's novel is his depiction of the make-believe Central New York town of Mohawk. It is as if the town is real- maybe even Russo's birthplace- that is how vivid and wonderful his imagery of Mohawk is. Nonetheless, such conclusions are for the rest of the reading public to decide- once again, it is truly a wonderful book.
